I was shopping with friends when I fell in love with a stuffed gnome that I named Sven. Every time I saw him, I smiled. I wanted my friends and family to get the same feeling that I did, so I created gnomes for Christmas gifts that year. One of the recipients was my friend, Nanette Prewitt. A few months later, Nanette joined me in making gnomes to sell. That's where it began, and seeing all the smiles have been the best part of Gnotable Gnomes Shoppe.
I've always liked the mythical gnomes who protect the family, animals, and their dwellings. Throughout history, their roles have changed, but they've stayed consistent in their disdain for rudeness, demand for respect, and willingness to show their displeasure when they are unhappy. In our current culture, gnomes are thought of either Santa's helpers or ceramic statues in gardens.
Our gnomes are more the indoor type. They start from upcycled sweaters. I love to use all kinds of sweaters, sometimes the crazier the better. I also love Nordic sweaters and cashmere. I start using the sleeve for the body. I fill it with rice and add the hat and nose. Once they have their braids, beards, or both, their personality really takes shape. That's the time to add embellishments and give it a name.
We also enjoy making custom gnomes for people who want to have a personalized item or a keepsake using a treasured sweater or shirt.
Every gnome is completely one-of-a-kind. No two look alike, and no name is ever repeated. A truly unique gift for yourself or someone who deserves a smile!
